Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 11 [Cheapside, Friday Street, Watling Street and the Bank of England building site — obsolete copy]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 11, covers Cheapside and Old Change (EC4) in the edition marked "obsolete", and it catches this ground in the midst of change. Beneath the clearance notices, the textile and clothing warehouses on the sheet preserve the trading character of Old Change and Friday Street. They were replaced by the Bank of England complex in a shift from merchandise to offices. That complex has itself gone, demolished in 2007 for One New Change, so this ground has been cleared twice over. The Church of St Augustine with St Faith was bombed in 1941 and never rebuilt, but its Wren tower survives in the St Paul's Cathedral Choir School of 1967. The sheet also names St Matthew's Churchyard, the Sun Life Assurance Society offices and the Information Bureau. It records the cleared Bank of England site under construction and Gateway House being built, while the replacement edition maps the consolidated New Change complex over these streets and plots. The plan was made to assess fire risk, and it carries pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts and rebuilding. The sheet was reissued in November 1933, with a 1949 copyright date. Its latest dated correction is November 1955, and the replacement's reissue in November 1956 places the end of its regular updating at about 1956. Other streets on the sheet include Bread Street, Watling Street and Cannon Street.

Date Published: 1933 (1955)

November 1933 (reissue); copyright 1949. The latest explicitly dated correction we have identified on the sheet is November 1955. The replacement sheet was reissued in 1956, suggesting regular updating of this predecessor ceased around then. Key plans for other volumes acquired with this sheet record corrections up to March 1971, suggesting common working use until about that date.

Type: Vintage hand-coloured fire-insurance plan with later overpasted amendments

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 12 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
