Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 211 [Haymarket, Leicester Square, the Theatre Royal Haymarket and the National Gallery]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 211, covers the National Gallery, Leicester Square and Haymarket (WC2 and SW1), and it shows the gallery with its Duveen Wing marked but still without its Sainsbury Wing. On the sheet the plot to the gallery's west stands empty, a gap left by the destruction of Hampton's furniture store in the Blitz, and that wing opened on the site in 1991. The Leicester Square Theatre, later the Odeon West End, came down in 2015 to make way for The Londoner hotel, and the Dental Hospital closed in 1985 and is now the Hampshire hotel. The Haymarket Theatre still plays, and the Central Reference Library shown on St Martin's Street, which stands on the site of Isaac Newton's house, is still a library. The Royal Trafalgar Hotel and the Garrick Hotel are also named. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current by pasted slips recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction, October 1970, is a vacancy note at 12 Orange Street. The sheet was reissued in September 1938, with a 1950 copyright date, and the Volume IX key plan, acquired with the same group, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Panton Street, Whitcomb Street, Irving Street, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall East, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross Road and Oxendon Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume IX. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. A few small stains and rubbed areas. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 212 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
