Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 233 [Fitzrovia: Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Street, Rathbone Place and Percy Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 233, covers Fitzrovia's Tottenham Court Road and Percy Street (W1), and it shows radio and television premises alongside cinemas, film storage and clothing manufacture. These labels show how closely entertainment, specialist retailing and small-scale production were then interwoven, with workrooms behind and above the public frontages. The radio and television trade here boomed on war-surplus stock in the 1950s and has since dwindled. The dance hall and basement club marked beneath the Berkeley Cinema at 31 Tottenham Court Road were the Blarney Club premises, where UFO opened on 23 December 1966. Pink Floyd and Soft Machine were central to its psychedelic nights, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience appeared on 19 February 1967. UFO left later in 1967, before the sheet's final revision, so the map preserves its setting under a generic club label. La Continentale Cinema, which began as the Majestic Picturedrome of 1912, and the neighbouring Berkeley Cinema closed on 31 August 1976 and were demolished in 1977 to make way for offices and shops. The three-screen Classic opened on the site in 1981 and is now the Odeon Tottenham Court Road. The sheet also marks the Hanway Street basement cinema and film store. Goad's plans were drawn up to assess property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is October 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1940, with a 1950 copyright date, and a key plan covering this area, acquired with the same group of maps, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Oxford Street, Stephen Street, Rathbone Place, Gresse Street, Tudor Place, Hanway Street and Hanway Place.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Sheet 234A is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
