Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 409 [Paddington Basin, Edgware Road, Harrow Road and Paddington Goods Station]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 409, covers Paddington (W2), taking in the canal basin and the railway goods station. Paddington goods station and its yards were demolished in 1986 and are now Paddington Central, with offices, apartments, hospitality and public space in place of railway handling and storage. On the sheet, the National Carriers maintenance depot bears a name that was announced in 1968, and the company began operations in 1969 as part of the late-1960s reorganisation of railway road freight. The sheet also shows Paddington Basin and the Grand Junction Canal's Paddington Branch running past the Westminster City Council vehicle park and the Post Office telephone engineers' depot. Sarah Siddons secondary school, which opened on North Wharf Road in 1961, joined North Westminster Community School in 1980. The plan was kept current for fire-risk assessment by overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its latest dated correction is a vacancy note on Harrow Road premises immediately south-east of No. 131, dated February 1970. The printed base heading is dated February 1891, with a 1951 copyright date, and a South London key plan from the same group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Bishops Bridge Road, Irongate Wharf Road, Edgware Road, Praed Street, Chapel Street and St Michael's Street.
