Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 410 [Paddington: Edgware Road, Harrow Road flyover, Praed Street and Paddington Green Hospital]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 410, covers Paddington at Edgware Road and the Harrow Road flyover (W2), just before the Westway opened above it in July 1970. The sheet shows Paddington Green Children's Hospital still occupying its own complex, with wards and an outpatients department. The hospital closed in 1987, with its facilities transferring to St Mary's, and the 1895 building is now apartments. The 1937 Odeon Cinema and basement bingo hall at 319 Edgware Road closed in 1975 and had come down by 1994, and the site is now a car park. The sheet also names Paddington police station and section house, Midland Bank offices, the Post Office telephone engineers' depot and Olympia Business Machines' machinery warehouse, along with Paddington Basin. Steel and tube stores, timber and joinery premises and builders' supplies cluster around the basin, revealing a working waterside devoted to materials, storage and repair. This industrial landscape has since given way to the offices, homes and restaurants of Merchant Square, with a floating park occupying part of the basin itself. These working plans were used to price fire risk, and pasted slips kept them current as uses changed, layouts altered and buildings fell and rose. The latest dated corrections, from February 1970, mark premises at 4-8 Praed Street as vacant and include further vacancy labels on Edgware Road. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1945, with a 1951 copyright date, and a South London key plan from the same group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Harrow Road, Church Street, Irongate Wharf Road, North Wharf Road and Paddington Green.

August 1945 (resurvey and reissue); copyright 1951. The latest explicitly dated correction we have identified on the sheet is February 1970. Premises at 4–8 Praed Street marked vacant February 1970; further February 1970 vacancy labels on Edgware Road. The sheet is headed Volume XII, outside the South London coverage of the Volume X key plan. Key plans for other volumes acquired with this sheet record corrections up to March 1971, suggesting common working use until about that date.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume XII. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. The reverse side is plain, with nothing printed on it.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
