Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 59 [Cornhill, Threadneedle Street, Bishopsgate and Merchant Taylors' Hall]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 59, covers Cornhill, Threadneedle Street and Bishopsgate (EC3 and EC2), and reads as a roll-call of banking names since merged away. Williams Deacon's Bank, shown in Birchin Lane, joined Williams & Glyn's in 1970 and, in 1985, the Royal Bank of Scotland, which also appears on the sheet. The Bank of New South Wales became Westpac in 1982, and Midland Bank was bought by HSBC in 1992 and lost its name in 1999. Lloyds Bank on Lombard Street, however, still trades. Merchant Taylors' Hall was bombed in September 1940 and reopened in March 1959 on the site it has held since 1347. St Michael Cornhill, with its Hawksmoor tower, and Wren's St Peter upon Cornhill both survive today. These working plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1945, with a 1949 copyright date, and was later amended, but no correction on it carries a date. Key plans acquired with the group were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Gracechurch Street and Finch Lane.
