A projecting porch, added with the mayor's parlour in the 1590s to a civic building of medieval fabric, gives Exeter's Guildhall an unmistakable presence in old prints. An 1829 view sets the building in Fore Street and Dugdale's engraving of 1845 shows it in the street, while two measured drawings by James Crocker Junior, awarded the RIBA Institute Medal in 1875, examine its architecture in close detail. Further views of 1898 and 1908 carry the hall into the twentieth century, and Ernest Haslehust's study of the porch was published in Our Beautiful Homeland in 1920.
