Read moreUtrecht, the Dutch city of canals and a great cathedral tower, was once the seat of a bishopric, and its antique maps begin with that old territory. Bertius and Langenes mapped the bishopric as Ultrajectum in 1603, and Zatta in 1779 and Russell in 1801 set Utrecht among the provinces of the Netherlands. Baedeker's town plans of 1897 to 1910 and later city plans follow the streets of the historic centre, and regional sheets link it with Amsterdam and Leiden. The prints show canals with the tower beyond, a university fete in 1881 and the festival of St Nicholas, with a 1904 series of everyday scenes from spinning to shrimp-fishing.
