Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 30 [Fleet Street, Inner Temple, Middle Temple and Temple Church]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 30, covers Fleet Street, the Strand and the Inner and Middle Temple (EC4), a lawyers' precinct rebuilt after the Blitz. Temple Church, consecrated in 1185 and gutted by incendiaries in May 1941, was rededicated in November 1958 and still serves both Inns. Temple Church also features in Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code and was a filming location for the 2006 adaptation starring Tom Hanks. The sheet shows the rebuilt Inner Temple Hall, which records that restoration. The hall opened in 1955 and the building was completed in 1958, which is the latest alteration identified and dates the sheet's amended state to about 1958 or later. Middle Temple Hall, the scene of the first recorded performance of Twelfth Night in 1602, still stands, and Middle Temple Library reopened in 1958. Child & Co, beside the Temple Bar memorial, banked here from 1673 until its branch closed in 2022, while Lloyds Bank left 222 Strand in 2017. The sheet also names Temple Gardens, Middle Temple Lane, Inner Temple Lane, Crown Office Row and Essex Street. The plan was made to judge fire risk, and it carries undated overlays noting changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. It was resurveyed and reissued in February 1948, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971.
