Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 34 [Fleet Street, Fetter Lane, New Street Square and Gough Square]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 34, covers Fleet Street and Gough Square (EC4), where Dr Johnson's House then stood among the trades serving the newspapers. The house, at 17 Gough Square, is shown but not named on the sheet, and it has been a museum since 1914. Around New Street Square, the sheet shows bookbinding, paper storage and printing premises, revealing the support trades behind Fleet Street's newspapers. The square was rebuilt in 2008 and now holds professional-service offices, including Deloitte, with print manufacture replaced by office-based employment. In the sheet's day, Extel House housed the Exchange Telegraph news agency, which was founded in 1872. The sheet also names the Central London Institute, Newspaper House, Pemberton House, the Crane offices and Gough House. These working plans were compiled for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is a large vacancy label of September 1969 in Crane Court. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Fetter Lane, New Fetter Lane, Great New Street, East Harding Street, West Harding Street and Pemberton Row.
