Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 31 [Fleet Street, Bouverie Street, Whitefriars Street and Hoare's Bank]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 31, covers Fleet Street and Whitefriars (EC4), showing the newspaper quarter while the presses still ran. At the time, linotype casting and newsprint stores made Fleet Street a place of manufacture. The News of the World left its premises on Bouverie Street for Wapping in January 1986, and Associated Newspapers' Northcliffe House works on Tudor Street is now offices behind its retained facade. Hoare's Bank, founded in 1672 and owned by Sir Richard Hoare's descendants, still trades from the Fleet Street banking house rebuilt in 1829. The Inner Temple Library, burnt out in May 1941, reopened in April 1958, and the sheet shows the United Society for Christian Literature nearby. The plan was drawn for insurers pricing fire risk and maintained with pasted slips recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated corrections are from January 1968, when the Fleet Street frontage of block 287 was marked vacant. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1954, with a 1954 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Whitefriars Street, Temple Lane, Lombard Lane, Pleydell Street, Serjeants' Inn and King's Bench Walk.
