The Geographical Journal

The Geographical Journal, published from 1893 by the Royal Geographical Society, succeeded the Society’s earlier publication, the Proceedings of the RGS (1857–1892), and became the Society’s principal platform for sharing contemporary geographic research, exploration narratives, and cartographic innovation. The journal featured numerous folding maps and detailed survey reports, often contributed by prominent explorers, scientists, and colonial officials. Among its most notable maps were early surveys of Tibet, Central Africa, and Antarctica, as well as expedition maps of British India, the Middle East, and East Africa. Together with its predecessor, The Geographical Journal remains a vital record of 19th- and early 20th-century exploration and imperial geography.
