Horton Kirby lies in the Darent valley south of Dartford, and its maps follow the village from the Georgian countryside to the eve of the motorways. Cary's map of 1786 and a later issue of 1811 spell the name Horton Kirkby and place it among Southfleet, Darenth, Hartley and the ground around Ebbsfleet. A vintage sheet of 1964 shows it beside Sutton-at-Hone, South Darenth and Farningham before the M25 and M20 arrived. An engraving of 1867 records the boys' home in the village, near Farningham.
