CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'The rotunda, Ranelagh Gardens, in 1750 '

Ranelagh Gardens were public pleasure gardens in Chelsea, in the 18th century. The centrepiece was a rococo 120ft (37m) diameter Rotunda, which was an important venue for musical concerts. In 1765, the nine-year-old Mozart performed there. Canaletto painted the gardens, and painted the interior of the Rotunda twice. The rotunda was demolished in 1805. The gardens are now part of the grounds of Chelsea Hospital and the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show.
