Stedman, Charles

Charles Stedman (1753–1812) was a British Army officer who fought in the American War of Independence under General Howe and afterwards wrote his "History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War" (1794), which according to the bibliographer Joseph Sabin is "generally considered the best contemporary account of the Revolution written from the British side"; included are several detailed maps of key engagements. He was twice taken prisoner during the war, and sentenced to be hanged as a rebel; but on each occasion he managed to escape.
