Cocks et Feret

Cocks et Féret. See below for our stock of wine appellation maps (cartes vinicoles) from the authoritative directory of Bordeaux wine originally created by Charles Cocks and Michel-Édouard Féret in 1846, and from later editions through the early 20th century. Féret, a French publisher, approached Charles Cocks, an English wine enthusiast living in Bordeaux, to produce a wine reference guide for the English market. The resulting directory of Bordeaux wine now known simply as Cocks et Feret was originally published in English under the name Bordeaux, its Wines and the Claret Country, and later in French as Bordeaux et ses vins in 1850. It is regarded as the classic reference work and the most comprehensive information source on Bordeaux wines and wineries. In the pioneering original work, a decade before the Official 1855 Classification, Cocks assessed Château Haut-Brion, Château Margaux, Château Lafite and Château Latour as Premiers Crus, and Château Brane-Mouton (now Château Mouton Rothschild), Château Durfort, Château Lascombes, Château Gorse (now Château Brane-Cantenac), Château Léoville (now Château Léoville-Barton, Château Léoville-Poyferre and Château Léoville-Las Cases), Château Rauzan (now Château Rauzan-Gassies and Château Rauzan-Ségla), and Château Gruaud-Larose as Deuxiemes Crus.
