Baynes, Pauline

Pauline Diana Baynes (1922-2008) was an English illustrator, author, and artist. She contributed illustrations to more than 200 books, mostly in the children's and fantasy genres. She was the original illustrator of some of J. R. R. Tolkien's minor works and of C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. Her notable contributions to cartography were the 1970 poster "Map of Middle-earth", based on the cartographic sketches of J.R.R. Tolkien and his son Christopher and published by Allen & Unwin. A now very scarce companion map showing the sphere of action of The Hobbit. There and Back Again: a Map of Bilbo's Journey Through Eriador and Rhovanion, was published by Allen & Unwin in 1971. She also produced "A Map of Narnia and the Surrounding Countries" printed in 1972 by H.L. Vickery
