Country between Peking & the Gulf of Pechili. Taku forts. China. WELLER 1863 map

Price: £88.99

TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Map of the Country between Pe-King & the Gulf of Pe-Chili showing the advance from the Taku Forts to Pe-King'

The map depicts the route taken by the British forces during the Second Opium War of 1860. In 1859, a British naval force had attacked the forts guarding the mouth of the Hai River. During the action, US Navy Commodore Josiah Tattnall, came to the assistance of the British gunboat HMS Plover, which is claimed to be the first time that British and independent American troops fought side by side. In 1860, an Anglo-French force landed at Pei Tang before capturing the Taku Forts and subsequently advancing to and capturing Beijing.
