TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Thames Embankment Railway. Elevation of proposed Viaduct for the public carriage road, showing also Lock and Tidal Entrances to Floating Docks'

By 1855 there had been many proposals to embank the Thames, the first of which by Sir Christopher Wren. This map shows a detail of Henry Bird's proposed scheme. His scheme included leaving many of the existing wharves and warehouses in place, with floating and tidal docks behind the embankment. The Embankment of the Thames was eventually constructed from 1862 to the design of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, with a railway (the District Line) running under the road.
