TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Carte géographique, statistique et historique des possessions anglaises'

The map shows the eastern part of the British North American colonies (now Canada). The borders with the United States differ from those later resolved in the 1842 Webster-Ashburton Treaty. In the east, this treaty concluded the Aroostook War, a dispute over the location of the boundary between Maine on the one hand, and New Brunswick and the Province of Canada on the other. The treaty redefined the border between New Hampshire, Vermont and New York on the one hand, and the Province of Canada on the other, resolving the Indian Stream dispute and the Fort Blunder dilemma at the outlet to Lake Champlain. In the west, it established the border from Lake Superior to the Lac des Bois (Lake of the Woods), and reaffirmed the 49th parallel as the westward frontier up to the Rocky Mountains.
