CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Johnson's New York and the Adjacent Cities'

A large, decorative, hand-coloured (hand-colored) map of New York City and Brooklyn, printed in 1865. The maps covers Manhattan, much of Brooklyn, and parts of Jersey City and Hoboken bordering the Hudson. Some notable dfferences to today's city include the Receiving Reservoir in the place of today's Great Lawn within Central Park; Bloomingdale Square (between 8th and 9th Avenues, W 53rd-57th streets, since developed, is marked); the site of the Crystal Palace and distributing reservoir, now the New York Public Library, are marked. The map predates the construction of any bridges; the ferry routes crossing the Hudson and the East River are marked. Roosevelt Island is marked with its earlier name of Blackwell's island. The configuration of the Brooklyn Navy Yard differs from the modern layout, including as it does the US Cob Dock island. Ellis Island and Governors Island are shown both predating their later enlargement.
