[No Peace with I.G. Farben] Free Enterprise in our Time: II The World Patent Cartel by Lucille Corcos (1942). Vintage magazine feature map, 35.0 x 28.0cm, 13.75 x 11 inches

CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: [No Peace with I.G. Farben] Free Enterprise in our Time: II The World Patent Cartel

The map, "Free Enterprise in Our Time: II. The World Patent Cartel," uses hot-air balloons to symbolize international patent monopolies, showing how restrictive agreements stifled competition and innovation. These cartels maintained high prices, restricted production, and created barriers to progress using patent laws. The "Element Cartel" is a key example, creating exclusive zones of influence contrary to free trade. The U.S. played a central role, navigating between monopolies and open competition. The text critiques these practices for prioritizing profit over innovation. The accompanying article, "No Peace with IG Farben," highlights IG Farben’s role as the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical firm. Despite major scientific contributions - it produced 3 Nobel Laureates - the company used 30,000 Auschwitz prisoners for slave labour, conducted medical experiments, and supplied Zyklon B gas, used in Holocaust killings. IG Farben was seized by the Allies in 1945 and dismantled, and 13 of its executives were convicted of war crimes. It epitomizes corporate complicity in Nazi atrocities.
