CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: U.S. Coast Survey Sketch J showing the progress of the survey in Section No. X (Lower Sheet) from San Diego to Pt. Sal from 1850 to 1860 [Southern California Coast from San Diego to the Santa Barbara Channel including the Channel Islands. "New Town" marked in location of Wilmington, Los Angeles]

An extraordinary early survey chart of the Southern California coast, extending from Point Conception to the Greater Los Angeles area and San Diego Bay, and including Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands. At the time of publication, much of the coastline—particularly the entirety of what is now Los Angeles and Orange counties—remained unsurveyed, depicted as dotted lines. The triangulation that had been completed in the Los Angeles area is largely based around San Pedro, a coastal settlement with European roots dating back to 1769. Nearby, a "New Town" is marked in the area of Wilmington, which emerged as a distinct community around this period. This chart, produced under the supervision of A.D. Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey, was published in the 1860 edition of his annual report and represents one of the earliest systematic attempts to chart this now densely populated stretch of the California coast.
