'Africa'. Drawn & engraved by John & George Menzies for John Thomson's "New General Atlas" (Published in 1817). Antique early 19th century atlas map with original hand colouring, 50.0 x 56.5cm, 19.75 x 22.25 inches; Please note that this is a folding map.

CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Africa'

This wonderful large map shows Africa at the start of the colonial era, when it was still substantially unexplored by Europeans. The substantial blank area in the centre of the continent is described only as "Unknown parts". A non-existent mountain range traverses the continent west to east - the Mountains of Kong, and the Mountains of the Moon - a cartographic error that persisted for much of the 19th century. The Niger river is shown inaccurately to flow into one of a number of lakes marked in a location somewhere to the actual location of Lake Chad. A number of caravan routes across the Sahara are marked, along with salt and copper mines
