CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'New York City Transit Authority - Rapid Transit Guide'

Raleigh d'Adamo's New York City subway map, first issued in 1967, was the first to assign individual colours to each of the lines. In the mid-1960s, the construction of the Chrystie Street Connection in Chinatown, Manhattan, necessitated a redesign of George Salomon's existing map. The connection unified the BMT and IND divisions, rendering obsolete the three-colour network maps that had been in use since the 1930s. In 1964, the Transit Authority launched a competition for a new map design, which D'Adamo won. His proposal introduced, for the first time, distinct colours assigned to individual subway lines, replacing the outdated three-colour scheme tied to the original operating companies (IRT, BMT, IND). The map was officially first issued in 1967 to coincide with the opening of the Chrystie Street Connection. This is the 1968 edition of the map.

Packing

Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.
