'A map of the Northern and Middle States; comprehending the Western territory and the British Dominions in North America from the best authorities' by Jedidiah Morse (1792). Antique engraved hand-coloured copperplate map, 32.5 x 40.5cm, 12.75 x 16 inches; Please note that this is a folding map.

A very good example of Morse/Stockdale's map of the Northern and Mid-Atlantic States, with original hand colour. The map is notable for the many land grants shown in the Western Territory, which then included Ohio, Tennessee and the Old Northwest Territory. The grants include the Illinois Company, Army Lands, Wabash Company, "New Jersy" [Jersey] Company, Ohio Company, the Seven Ranges, the Donation Lands from the Commonwealth of Virginia and General Clark's Grant. Many settlements are noted in the West, along with early forts (Chartres, Miamis, Pitt, Chenes, West Point, Venango). Native American Indian settlements are shown. St. Louis appears on the map, as does Louisville, Ste. Genevieve, Port Vincent (Vincennes), New Madrid, St. Phillips, Cahokir (Cahokia), and the Kaskaskais Village.
