CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: [London in 1842 - taken from the summit of the Duke of York's Column] South view - This Picture of the Metropolis of the British Empire is presented to the subscribers of the Illustrated London News by…

Panorama of London in 1842 looking south from the Duke of York's Column at the south end of Waterloo Place, including St James's Park and Horseguards Parade in the foreground, with Buckingham Palace at the extreme right, St. Paul's Cathedral at the extreme left, and a partial view of the Thames, with Waterloo & Blackfriars Bridges. Westminster Abbey appears in the centre background. Originally published as a pair of views on a single sheet looking north and south from the same point, this is the south view only. It is believed to have been the largest wood-block engraving published to that date and caused a sensation on publication. The panorama was given to weekly subscribers of at least 6 months standing (the ILN had only begun publishing 8 months earlier) and otherwise sold to clients.
