'The Martyrs' memorial service, Kirkconnell Moor - On many wild and lone hillsides in the southern counties of Scotland monuments have been raised to mark the places where Scottish Presbyterians suffered death rather than submit to the unifromity Act of 1662, passed to compel them to worship god according to the ritual of the English church. Funds for the erection of these monuments were raised mostly by collections taken at field preachings held in the different localities, and their upkeep is provided for in the same manner'. Photo by J. Valentine (1900). Antique photographic book illustration. This print was published in 1900 but please note that it may depict an earlier scene or relate to an earlier event dated 1662 and the printmaker may have drawn on an earlier original work, 13.5 x 21.0cm, 5.25 x 8.25 inches
