TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'Proposed Crystal Way referred to by Mr William Moseley in his evidence of the 10th May 1855'

In 1855, the architect William Moseley proposed a plan to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Metropolitan Communications for a pneumatic, smoke free railway below street level between St Paul's Cathedral and Oxford Circus with a branch to Piccadilly Circus. It was to be covered by a traffic-free wrought-iron grid walkway, with a glass canopy roof (hence the Crystal Way), with shops, hotels and residences on each side. It had similarities to Paxton's better known "Great Victorian Way". However the scheme did not address the main issue of city communications, namely that the mainline train stations were unconnected to each other, and was never developed.
